1. Happy NZ Music Month! How did you initially get into creating music?
Thank you! I started music when I was 11, I learned how to play guitar and my tutor at the time Steve Fowler had a music studio in Christchurch and asked if I was interested in taking more individual lessons outside of my intermediate. He then introduced me to my first vocal coach and asked me to be a lead singer for a band. At 13 I started writing my own music and the rest is history!

2. Tell us about your inspirations & motivations?
From a young age I’ve always wanted to be a singer-songwriter, I looked up to people like Taylor Swift and aspired to be like her. Going to concerts was a really big motivation for me because I always wondered what it’d be like to be on that stage with all those people watching you and singing along to your songs. So ever since I’ve always strived for that, songwriting is my main passion and that’s why I think I’ve been so determined to make it happen.

3. What have you been up to in this lockdown and how has it affected you?
I’ve actually been doing a lot of things for music and keeping busy which has been good. I’ve also done the classic things that everyone has been doing like baking, watching movies, going for walks and eating endlessly.

4. What do you think of the NZ music scene?
I think especially for pop music it is really thriving. There’s actually a lot of new and upcoming artists that are really exciting and making the NZ music scene one to watch. It can be hard sometimes to cut through so much noise but I think this mantra that NZ Music Month has come up with is the perfect way to support Kiwi artists in this time. “Support Local. Stream Local. Follow Local. Buy Local.” I’d love to hear more upcoming acts on our local radio stations because there’s so much talent in our country.

5. Goal board time – where would you like to see yourself in a year’s time?
I would love to be on one of those big stages performing, opening for an international artist would definitely be a goal.
