Alternative indie-pop artist Bridges has burst onto the New Zealand music scene, with a new sound of pop melodies soaked in atmospheric guitars and driving rhythms, all set to rich vocal tones expressing a powerful vulnerability.
Writing and performing as an acoustic singer/songwriter for years, Rachel Hamilton – the person behind the project – has been diversifying her sound since moving from her home city of Christchurch, to study music in Auckland. Bridges marks the beginning of a new era, of a richer and dramatic sound.

1. Happy NZ Music Month! How did you initially get into creating music?
Thank you! Happy NZ Music Month to you too. I began playing guitar when I was 13, so I’d have more freedom to write my own music. I had already been playing the violin for six years but it wasn’t the easiest instrument to sing to! Growing up, church and school choir was where I would sing, but I wanted to find my own voice and discovered the guitar as a way to do this. As soon as I learnt my first three chords, I wrote my first song and I’ve been writing ever since 🙂
2. Tell us about your inspirations & motivations?
My feelings and thoughts of how I observe the world around me is where I draw inspiration from. It’s often about needing to make sense of something; if I’m confused, writing about it can be a helpful way of understanding the feeling or situation. I like to capture the sound of how I feel, which is why my songs can get a bit moody and intense haha!
3. What have you been up to in this lockdown and how has it affected you?
I have four fabulous female flatmates, so I’ve been hanging out with them a lot in my bubble! We’ve had themed dress up nights, morning flat yoga and pizza nights – this parts been great. We tried to start a puzzle but gave up on that pretty quickly.
I feel things quite deeply, so with everything going on in the world I’ve been focusing on trying to be kind to myself, look after my mental health and not put myself under any pressure to achieve heaps.
4. What do you think of the NZ music scene?
I think it’s great! New Zealanders work super hard at their craft and there’s a lot of incredible musicians here creating really likeable and original music. The support and excitement around NZ Music is also brilliant – it just shows what a cool community the NZ music scene is to be a part of.
5. Goal board time – where would you like to see yourself in a years time?
In a years time, I would have loved to have been performing a lot more live shows. Considering the situation at the moment though, that might not be possible! We’ll see, fingers crossed. I plan to have released my EP by this time next year though regardless. Otherwise, and most importantly, in a years time I’d like to see myself content, happy, healthy and creating music 🙂

Alternative indie-pop artist Bridges is back with a second single, Weightless Without.
Atmospheric guitars soak the sonic landscape, held down by a driving rhythm section building in intensity into a wall of sound. Bridges’ delicate determination and rich vocal tones are relentless in delivering the full force of the underlying story.
A whisper of strength floods into a tidal wave of power, as Bridges expresses the weight of what it takes to free yourself from a toxic relationship.
“You pull me under; and then I’m gone… I now see the instability, and the way you played with gravity” are just some of the lyrics showcasing the drama present in the story, as Bridges invites the listener on a journey in realising this relationships’ unhealthy imbalance.
