Great Gable Kicked off their small run of shows here in NZ to a very-excited Auckland crowd. The crowd took a while to pack-in and I’d say there were only about a handful of people there as the first act took the stage.
Abby Wolfe kicked off the show! People continued to drip in as she played. I was a bit bummed the crowd wasn’t as large as I think she is an incredible musician and really deserves to be heard by more people.
It was quite the stripped-back set as she was joined by only one other guitarist onstage. But I think it was the perfect decision as it really gave the spotlight to her voice. She executed a lot of her songs flawlessly and it was just a really great set. I could‘ve listened to her all night.

The crowd was steadily growing as Louisa Nicklin took the stage. Her set didn’t get off to a great start with her mic not working but she just kept going and it eventually kicked in. I had never heard Louisa before but her voice was great and provided such a different element to the show. It almost made me think of Aldous Harding in some ways. Louisa was joined by 2 other musicians as well – 1 on drums and 1 on bass.

But finally the time came for the main act, Great Gable. The lights went out and ‘Love is all you need’ by The Beatles started playing. The crowd sang along and it was almost quite the intro for the band to take the stage, though the singing broke out into screaming.
The crowd was really getting into the set and I loved seeing the guys in the crowd have the best time. Great Gable seem to have a strong male fan base as well as female.
The band mentioned how they had played here recently and think their just going to move here. Though vocalist Alex Whitman later clarified it was more, have a place here they’d come back to a lot.
There was somewhat of a happiness and passion in the way Great Gable perform and I think that really resonated in the crowd. Throughout the night the band was introduced bit by bit but I particularly loved that they acknowledged everyone from the bar staff to the sound guy. It was awesome.
Throughout the night Alex also attempted his Maori pronunciation, with “Kia Ora” at the start, speaking on how their going to ”Tauranga” next and even throwing in a “chur”.
The guys gave a great performance and you just couldn’t shake the great energy that came off that crowd and the band themselves
