Introducing kiwi group Balu Brigada (aka Henry and Pierre Beasley) who are not only brothers but multi-talented musicians, songwriters and producers.

While the pandemic postponed their live ‘Bop Fiasco’ show for now, the boys treated fans to a special set on Facebook as part of the Jam On Toast festival. Their latest catchy tune ‘Medicine’ has already amassed hundreds of thousands of streams online and is the first taste of their upcoming project.

1. Happy NZ Music Month! How did you initially get into creating music?
Woo, you too! We have an artistic background with our parents being dancers and actors and our Grandfather being an orchestral conductor. Naturally that led from learning the piano to us to playing disgusting renditions to Black Sabbath songs. Then our tastes guided us from classic ‘Rock Room’ type jams to writing, producing and rehearsing music closer to what we indulge in now. Kind of a beautiful bastardization of pop, funk, alt rock and R&B.

2. Tell us about your inspirations & motivations?
They’re definitely changing all the time. At this very moment we’re enjoying a lot of Daft Punk, and Christine & and the Queens. The French just have something swaggy going on. Artists like Gorillaz, Frank Ocean and Pharell are some that we continually draw inspiration from, and have ever since we found out about them. Our motivations are mostly to do with trying to get our music in front of audiences as much as possible, at home and overseas. And also trying to develop our live show into something special and memorable.

3. What have you been up to in this lockdown and how has it affected you?
Finishing songs that have been on the back burner mostly, but trying not to put pressure on ourselves to do the best thing ever in a time which might feel perfect to do that. We’ve been playing a lot of Nintendo Switch as well. Also enjoying the new Michael Jordan series on Netflix, MJ really rips, have you seen his air time? Sheesh.

4. What do you think of the NZ music scene?
The NZ music scene is great, it’s super diverse and for how small we are as a nation I think we’re doing pretty well to leave our mark internationally. Generally everyone is hella friendly and supportive of one another which is super important.

5. Goal board time – where would you like to see yourself in a year’s time?
Headlining Coachella, Laneway, Leeds festival, Glastonbury, Governors ball, Primavera, Lollapalooza and my mates backyard festival.
