PRINS kicked off 2020 with a bang playing in The Edge NYE Festival in Hagley Park, Christchurch with a record audience of 22,000 people. Recently returning from Auckland where she played alongside International acts in Highlifes’s sold out Sunsetters Festival. She’s now gearing up for her much anticipated dance-pop EP which shows a brand new side to the PRINS we’ve already seen.

Young and determined Alannah (PRINS) headed full force into the music industry with singles making NZ on Air’s NewTracks, receiving radio airplay and launching her into her first International Tour in August 2019. This Auckland born singer-songwriter, dancer, actor and model has spent the past few years establishing herself with live performance experience in New Zealand and has no intention of leaving the industry any time soon. A sultry powerhouse described as a mix between Dua Lipa and Amy Winehouse, PRINS is one to watch out for in 2020.

CHECK OUT OUR LITTLE CATCH-UP WITH PRINS BELOW:

.

1. Happy NZ Music Month! How did you initially get into creating music?
Happy Music Month! I initially got into creating original music after my guitarist poached me from another band. He had produced a bit of original music at the time and we had formed a cover duo/band and I decided to approach him about writing a track together. A year and a half later and we’re still at it!

2. Tell us about your inspirations and motivations?
Inspiration/motivation to write can come from almost anywhere. I love to write about personal experiences and things I have been/am going through but I do occasionally write out of pure fantasy too. Inspiration comes in many waves and weird times and places so I also like to have my notes handy!

3. What have you been up to in this lockdown and how has it affected you?
Lockdown for me has been relatively enjoyable. I live alone and am happy in my own space so have loved having time to focus more on personal development. Asides from writing a bit of music of course, I have been spending time focusing on some of life’s simple pleasures like reading, walking, cooking, learning. The only downside has been with the release of my latest track ‘Magnetic’, which came out the day before lockdown. It’s been a challenge to get media attention while in a global pandemic but what can you do!

4. What do you think of the NZ music scene?
The NZ Music Scene is constantly changing, especially during NZ Music Month, it has been incredible to see how many new artists are putting tracks out. There seems to be a bit of a shift in style for NZ music and I’m enjoying watching it diversify! I’m grateful for the many resources we have here to support artists and urge people to take advantage of these and get involved! We are very lucky!

5. Goal board time – where would you like to see yourself in a year’s time?
I love setting goals! In a year’s time I would like to have secured and played a summer festival circuit around NZ and be looking towards my second international tour. Alongside that, another EP, more collabs and just more music + live shows!

PRINS is without question one of the most exciting new dance-pop acts making music in New Zealand right now.

She firms up that reputation with her new single ‘Magnetic’, which was co-written with and produced by none other than Nick ChrispWill Thomas AKA Kiwi electronic duo SACHI; and Timothy Heeringa.

“’Magnetic is a much needed alter ego release,” says PRINS. “It carries the intention to make people let loose and dance.”

Inspired by the self-indulgence of a toxic relationship, and exploring the idea of two people who can’t stay away from each other despite the damage it causes, ‘Magnetic’ was recorded mainly in SACHI’s Auckland studio.

Magnetic’ follows on from 2019’s singles ‘3AM’ and ‘Notion’.  It kicks off a big year ahead for PRINS, whose real name is Alannah Prins, who has also been making her mark this summer on the live scene. She performed at The Edge NYE Festival in Hagley Park to a record crowd of 22,000, while also performing alongside international acts at Highlife’s sold out Sunsetters Festival.

Born in Auckland and now based in Christchurch, PRINS – who is a dancer, actor and model – has spent the past few years establishing herself as a performer. ‘Magnetic’ and the music that’s set to follow, lays down the foundations for more to come from the exciting up-and-comer. Stay tuned!
